Jen1245 • New Member • Posts: 1

Forgot to Format SD card. Device won't read it.

Help! I purchased a 64GB SD card for my Nikon D3400 for holiday. I was playing with the camera and concluded upward taking photos in "RAW" format?

Anyway, I didn't format the the SD card. I merely put it in and used information technology. Now my iPad card reader won't read the card? Information technology says no Fat(32) file detected.

The photographic camera allows me to view the photos when I have the retentivity card in only the memory card reader app won't view them.

Are all my photos gone?? Whatsoever suggestions or assistance would be appreciated.. I'one thousand but learning how this works.. give thanks you lot!

How about linking your camera to the computer via USB.

Although there is a (pricey) Nikon cablevision for information technology the on-camera socket looks similar a standard Micro-USB connexion.

A 64 GB card would be a SDXC menu.  The default filesystem for SDXC is exFAT.  If the iPad is running an old version of iOS from many years agone, it might non recognize exFAT.  Another possibility is that it is not recognizing D3400 RAW format.  You need iOS 10.two or later for that.

If you are using the Camera Connection USB adapter (meant only for direct connections to cameras) with a USB card reader, make certain it is one that can handle SDXC cards; not only the before SD and SDHC ones.

The photographic camera allows me to view the photos when I have the memory card in but the retentiveness card reader app won't view them.

Information technology doesn't sound like it.  The iPad probably isn't trying to write much of anything to the menu, and at this bespeak, I'd suggest Non giving it any more opportunities to practise so.

My suggestion is to get a SD / SDHC / SDXC card reader for your computer.  Use it to transfer the photos to your figurer.  Once they are safe, yous can play around with finding and fixing the iPad result.

Re: Forgot to Format SD card. Device won't read information technology.

If the card has never been formatted at all, then the pictures would never have been saved.

Can your camera see the pictures? If you tin can review the pictures in camera, they tin be recovered, if not they were never saved.

The cards are pre-formatted

The cards come up pre-formatted. In any instance, a card can only work in the camera if information technology is formatted.

Your images are very likely fine. Regarding what Tom_N wrote, how old is your iPad and what version of iOS is it running?

That'due south a very skilful idea, peculiarly every bit a new camera owner and when on a trip that can't easily exist repeated.  Shooting RAW is the failsafe method when using modern cameras that have so many options and functions.

Anyway, I didn't format the the SD carte. I just put it in and used it. Now my iPad menu reader won't read the carte? It says no Fat(32) file detected.

The camera allows me to view the photos when I take the retention carte in but the memory card reader app won't view them.

Then the photos are probably fine.

Your reckoner doesn't demand to read the carte.  Only connect the camera to your PC via the Nikon USB cable ($10).  The Nikon Transfer software (gratuitous) will take care of the rest.

I well-nigh never remove the SD card from the camera...

Equally noted above, your ipad card reader is for FAT (32) format.  64gb card is EXFAT a different format.  Yous can upload via USB. or get a carte du jour reader that does EXFAT or High chapters SD cards.

64 GB is SDXC blazon of card. Your card reader is uniform perhaps with SDHC (up to 32 GB cards). SDXC uses exFAT not FAT32. Solution: get a SDXC compliant card reader.

Maybe you'll accept the SD Association's give-and-take for it.

I already knew that after reading the first member pointing it out.

The 2nd one kind of made me think it was even more true but when you go the third one to say the same affair you know that information technology is truthful.

Then you went on a vacation without trying out your gear first?

Information technology would take less than a minute to fire off a few shots and then test view them on your iPad. Sounds like your iPad doesn't similar the card exFAT structure or RAW format (perchance both).

My advice would be to use several 16G SD cards rather than 1 64Gb SD, and save in JPEG format. I've never had an effect reading JPEGs with either my iPads or PCs.

My experience is that the usefulness of shooting RAW is grossly exaggerated.

Hi, I merely did a photoshoot and I forgot to format my sd card beforehand. I can preview the photos in camera but I tin't import them into lightroom because the files can't exist read. Do yous know how I tin can recover these photos?

What kind of carte du jour are yous using? What carte du jour reader are you using?

Not just are there SD cards, simply also SDHC, SDXC, and SDUC cards, which all wait similar, just can't be read by all card readers. Perhaps your card reader isn't a loftier plenty specification to read the card.

Hither is information on the cards:

Too, note that this thread is over 3 years old, and you might go better response if you had created your own new thread.

Mark has good advice.

A more basic investigation: can you look at the files on your Carte by any native File Manger (get down every folder to look for files) of your organisation, due east.g. Windows Explorer of Windows PC.

If the File Manger can't read the Card, probable a card reader compatibility effect. Try another card reader might do.

If you can playback/review an prototype in-camera after it was shot, information technology should accept been stored somewhere on your card.

Not format a carte before use, normally is a no issue for nearly brands. What in-camera formatting volition do is to erase everything on the card by quick formatting (more precisely speaking reset the File Allotment Table at the header), so create a set of binder system it used, e.g. DCIM which is the most mutual folder used etc.

For card which has the right file system, i.eastward., non NTFS, if it is the starting time time inserted to your camera, and it has no binder system your photographic camera needed, information technology will just create it on power up of the camera. It actually does like to in-camera formatting, except leave anything on the card of pervious used untouched.

The bespeak if if you share the same card among a few brands of photographic camera, yous would have many folders on the card. No existent harm on operation, just not a good practice on file organisation direction only.

Beak of Photonstophotos has tested many cameras and he confirmed having no problem on non doing in-camera formatting on the cards used to exam on cameras. I besides rarely formatted cards in-camera on my few Cards I share among my few cameras (although they are the same make). This could be required on older models during the dawn of digital camera, non nowadays.

The most frequent problem I've had is where the card'south partitions have had an accident at some point. Generally I'd try some general-purpose photo recovery kickoff (e.g. Photorec if you lot accept a PC and are okay with a control prompt and then something cleverer, like TestDisk later if you don't get anywhere). Also many SD cards come with free recovery software, so await for that.

Your Photos are not gone forever, they are merely not visible. Connect your camera to the figurer and see if yous can find those photos. You can upload via USB or go a card reader to connect the card to the camera.
Format your card with exFAT equally it is SDXC to avert further abuse. Don't worry about the photos, your photos won't go anywhere, you lot can easily detect them using recovery software like stellar or recoverit. But about importantly, you need to fix your SD carte du jour.

Agreed!

Likewise, in general, formatting a damaged card is non a good thought if yous are trying to recover data.  Even a high-level format that doesn't attempt to overwrite all of the card's data will generally reduce your chances of information recovery.

I suppose that if you had tried everything else (short of sending the card to an outfit that would charge you enormous sums of money, with no promise of success), y'all could say, "I'm going to assume the information is lost, simply I'll try doing a high-level format and a recovery, on the outside chance that some of it isn't."
